YADA House

I started my Junior League placement at the YADA House this week. We had a meeting on Tuesday evening where I found out that I started on Thursday (short notice)! It was good though. I think I will really like it. For all of those that don't know...The YADA House is a program for high school students to interact with peers and local artists to build knowledge, portfolios, confidence and self-esteem. (I totally copied that from the JLM website...)

Here is a link to the YADA House art that has been reproduced in prints for sale. You can tell that the students are very talented. http://www.juniorleaguemobile.org/?nd=yada

On Thursday, we had our first art class. The art teacher is Mrs. Kogon (the art teacher at St. Paul's). She is very talented and I was super impressed at how she was able to interact with the students (as they are of all levels and backgrounds). I wasn't prepared to actually participate in the class, but there is no opting out with Mrs. Kogon so I also learned about negative and positive art as well. My sketch was a little rough, but it was fun nonetheless.

Basically, JLM owns the small house behind headquarters that has been remodeled into an art studio. The sole purpose of this space is for the YADA House. The students are from everywhere. The class, supplies, snacks, everything is free. And with all that said, we had only 4 students attend this past Thursday. From what I understand, JLM sends out information to all the high school art teachers in the Mobile area (19 total). The teachers basically are too busy to bother so we only have 7 students participating this year (and most found out from friends that participated before). All I can say is that the current students are going to have some great one-on-one time with a very talented artist. Hopefully, they will be able to obtain college art scholarships like some of the students in the past.
